Gee I've had the same vinegar eels in quart preserving jars for 25 years 
they sit on top of the highest tanks in my fish room right next to the 
florescent lights. Once a year , if i remember I empty out half the culture 
add diluted vinegar and a slice of apple, then again I have gone a year 
doing nothing and there are still eels,
