I keep all my planted tanks on timers set to stay on for 14 hours. I have

had little algae problem this way but make sure I have a large enough
biomass

of vascular plants to take up enough nutrients to keep algae in check.

Most...not all....of my Aphyosemions grow comfortable with a lighted tank

as long as there is plenty of top cover. The colors of some of these males

that have become comfortable in one of these tanks rival any saltwater
species.
