RE: Vinegar eels?

Hi Gay,

Unlike microworms, I have never had vinegar eels "crash". They do seem to
fade away over the course of several months. My cultures actually last over
a year and if I change half of the water/water mix and add another slice of
apple they will usually keep going for another year or so. I only feed
vinegar eels when I have a hatch of very small fry. I ignore them for
months at a time.

When I hatch a batch of fish they need to eat every day. Sometimes BBS will
not cooperate. For those days microworms are great. Sometimes microworms do
not cooperate as a result of poor planning. Then the vinegar eels makes an
excellent fallback food source even for slightly larger fry.

Where I live, if the worst happens, I can call a friend and get another
starter culture right away. Although I have had them for over three years
and have never lost them, I do keep two cultures, just in case. One large
gallon Jar and one smaller quart jar as a back up.

Any culture you really *need* to keep is worth keeping two of. This goes for
microworms white worms, grindel worms etc. Unforeseen things can and do
happen. The container could be dropped or thrown out or worse yet mixed with
olive oil and used as a salad dressing. A backup culture makes for super
cheap insurance.

As far as being productive, I find mine produce more worms in the summer
when the temperature is warmer. In winter when the temp falls under 65
degrees they seem to thin out.

Some food cultures are difficult to keep, they require special conditions
and are subject to sudden crashes but vinegar eel worms are not one of
these. If you can keep a pet rock going you will have no trouble with
vinegar eels!

Hello

I have a couple questions

What is the required on an on going bases and schedule in order to have or
maintain a continuous productive Vinegar eel culture ?

How can one tell when it's time to re-set a Vinegar eel culture / start a
new one ? Other than some day you look and find no vinegar ells and say to
your self "I guess that several days ago I should have re-set these
suckers". :)

Thanks
