RE: RO Unit-Deal???
Carefull Scott! The membrane and filter cartridges are most of the cost of
a unit. Go to Spectrapure at http://www.aquadirect.com/purify/spec.html
A 60 gal membrane is $60 to $80, and cartridges run about $15 each. The
whole unit brand new for a 2 see thru cartridge canisters plus 60 gpd ro
membrane is about $200. You can get a chepo Maxipure for about $135(25 gal)
to $156(60 gal)that will do the job. I would not bother with a 4 stage. A
two filter plus membrane is fine unless you have some specific problem you
want to filter for.(lead)
Now remember there are two lines coming out. One with RO water to a
holding tank. (plastic garbage can works fine) Nice to have a shutoff valve
on this one to prevent overflow) and one to a drain unles you want to save
the slightly more mineral rich water for other kinds of fish like lake
cichlids or even non soft water demanding fish. This "waste" water has gone
thru the sediment filter and carbon filter so it is real nice water, just
maybe 10% to 20% more rich in minerals than your incoming water. You are
dumping about 4 to 7 to one water for flush past the membrane. This means
for every gallon of ro you make you dump 4 to 7 gal down the drain. This
dumped water has been filtered and passed thru a chardcoal filter and is not
a whole lot harder than the starting water so if you can use it do it!

Subject: Re: RO Unit
Well my dilema got solved for me! I was talking with a
friend the LFS that I used to work for and he is
selling me his old SpectraPure 4-stage 60 gpd RO unit
for $50!! Wow. Only drawback is that I have to buy all
the cartridges and a new membrane. Did I understand
that I can get these at Home Depot? What do I need to
look for as far as a membrane goes?
TIA
Scott
