I really had not thought about this topic but I had a trio of STR and got
some eggs regularly. One female died and I got more than twice the eggs.
Just one observation. No conclusions...

Can there be too much of a good thing? Is there an optimal number of females
that should be kept with a male? I know that it is usually either 1:1 or
1:2. I was just wondering if 1:3 would produce more eggs, or less. I can see
how the more fish in the tank, the higher the risk of having eggs eaten. And
how many females can one male handle?
The species in question is Aphyosemion striatum. Although the results may
vary from species to species. It just so happens that I have one male and 3
females. I currently am keeping two females with the male and will rotate
out the third every so often.
