RE: Killie Fry
Hi Marc,
I usually do not rewet the peat with Nothos unless I have another batch of
the same fish due the following month. If I prewet the eggs before the hatch
I may still get a few fish which hatch later on, sometimes, but I often do
not have the water space to raise the few fry which hatch late and can not
be combined with their siblings for a couple of months. By extending the
incubation and prewetting there are very few, if any, late hatchers. I
suppose that I should be more careful with the words "all", "always" and
"never".
Some Europeans have taken up eliminating salt from their Nothos, some use
salt in their hatch mix and then SLOWLY add fresh water until the salt is
gone. Some do not use it at all or add very little. Salt is cheap and I age
my water anyway. So for my Nothos I add about 16 tsp salt to my 20 gal long
aging tank. I have had velvet anyway, so I am not sure if it really does
more good than howling at the moon, but when things are going well why
change the recipe.
Best regards,
-RJ-

Hi Tyrone,
For Nothos with long incubation times I open the container containing the
eggs and peat after the normal incubation time has elapsed and spray the
peat with a spray bottle set on mist until the peat is dark brown again, and
is clearly wet but not dripping. Then I close the container for an
additional week or two. By this point all of the eggs are eyed up and ready
to go. Just add water.
Best regards,
-RJ-
Does this mean that ALL the eggs will hatch. Are you
saying that I cannot dry the peat again and hatch them out in
another month?
I have another question. Northos need salt in their water.
When I change their water each week, do I add salt each time
again to their water. That I was never always sure about. Please
help me. Thank you,
Bro. Paul
