RE: Extending Diapause I in annuals -Inert liquids

You definitely do not want to use silicone fluids (Dow Corning, GE are two of the largest manufacturers). These synthetic oils are oil-miscible, and are water-repellent (used in cosmetics to form water-resistant make-up and moisturizers, etc.; in the electrical industry as replacement for PCBs). The chemical structures (depending on the viscosity and boiling point) are similar to mineral oils and ring-structured organic compounds, but with Silicon (Si) in place of the Carbon (C). Some of the lower viscosity compounds/blends are readily absorbed by the skin, and some of these materials will evaporate slowly at room temperature (some of the high viscosity fluids will give high viscosity motor oil a run for being thick). Once you get the liquids onto the eggs, you will not be able to remove the fluid without destroying the egg (assuming the egg hasn't been killed by the absorption of the silicone fluid).
