RE: What went wrong
Hi Steve,
Some folks might argue this but it works for me.
Wait longer before wetting the eggs, it might cut down on the number of
belly sliders.
Get rid of the filter in the fry container. Notho fry do not need it. My
research on Nothos tends to indicate that high oxygen and or water current
can cause them harm.
I hatch my Nothos in one inch of tap water with 1 tsp salt per gal. (pH
about 7.3 and soft) After a few days I add more from the original batch of
water I mixed when I hatched the fry, Every few days I add a little more
water. After two to three weeks, when the water gets funky and the Nothos
start swimming near the top. I move them to a grow out tank, where I have a
small corner filter bubbling slowly.
Best regards,
-RJ-

Subject: What went wrong
I've been attempting to reproduce the various species of Killies I have but
with no real success. The last time I wetted a bag of N. rubripinnis eggs I
thought I would finally have my breakthrough, but after a week and a half
they all died. I started out by dropping the eggs in aged tap water. After
a day there were about 20 fry swimming and 5 or so belly sliders. I fed
paramecium and rotifers for the three days, adding bbs on the 2nd day. All
feedings were once a day in the evening. They were in a one gallon
container with a small home made filter that was bubbling at a very slow
rate. There was a light over the tank that was on for about 10 hrs/day.
Temp was in the high 70's. The swimming fry took the bbs from the first day
I offered them. You could see their bellies were very full and they more
than doubled in size in a week. I did two water changes of about 15% over
the course of the week. I noticed that around 7 days after they had hatched
that several had died and I was down to about 10 free swimming fry but the
same number of belly sliders. Two days later all the free swimming fry were
dead. The last belly slidder hung on for about 4 more days and then it was
gone. I've checked the Ph and it is around 7.9, the water is very hard
(liquid rock is more like it) I have another bag of eggs from the same pair
which I plan on dropping tonight. But before I do I was hoping for some
feedback from the Notho experts on what I may have done wrong. Any help
would be appreciated.
