Re: Mosquito larva attacks baby fish!



Actually there are a fair number of mosquitoes that have predatory larvae.
One example was brought to Hawaii as a biological control agent for, of all
things, other mosquitoes.  These larvae get to be fairly large and can eat
Daphnia, other aquatic insect larvae and the tadpoles of the poison dart
frogs found in Manoa Valley (it is a big mosquito, the larvae looked like
they were an inch long easily). I suspect that this group of "Elephant
mosquitoes"  (*Toxorhynchites* sp.) are not unique and examples of other
genera, of the family Culicidae  (Mosquitoes) that display this adaptive
shift will be found in the other parts of the world.  We are just to often
expecting *Aedes* or *Culex* type mosquitoes.....
