I too like the look of the small gravel and have used pool filter sand, BUT
I found it is not all the same.  One batch was limestone pebbles which
buffered the pH at about 7.8 and elevated the hardness to rock hard.  It is
great for African cichlids but not what my killies and apistos needed.  I
make a point of testing all gravel with some HCl (hydrochloric acid) to make
sure it is inert
