Re: Fish sex change -- it happens, Jay
Hello, Jay. I had the same experience with a female(?) Rivulus marmoratus
many years ago. of course, it is not identical as these are self-fertilizing
hermaphrodites. The fish had produced viable eggs about two years and then
stopped laying eggs. Some months later it was apparent the fish became pink
in color and lost its rivulus spot! Since they are hermaphrodites, I didn't
know how to "breed" it with another fish. Still, it had changed and I assume
the ovaries had deteriorated leaving only male hormonal effect. Of course, in
marine fish the fish change sex very readily to insure a male is available
to fertilize the females. Thank goodness our sex orientation is "usually"
firmly set forever and I like it this way.
