I'm fond of the pool filter sand (coarse silica sand). I have a 4cm
deep layer in my 1.2 m tank and it is a sweet as ever and the
plants really love. It is easy to clean with a wide bore gravel syphon
(a coke bottle with the bottom cut off and the other end attached to
a 12mm bore hose pipe). I don't use it in my killi tanks for 2
reasons: 1) the tanks are too small for the gravle syphon and I can't
get into the corners with it...2) the nothos will spawn in it as readily
as the peat. I paint the bottom of my tanks balck/gray/brown
instead (on the outside!!!!).
I've had no problems so far...
