I hate bare bottomed tanks. I put a thin layer of playground sand in
almost all my tanks. If the tanks are well lit (not many are) I'll add
some Vallisneria. The fish (I keep aphyosemion and lampeyes mainly)
don't spawn on it, and I get plenty of eggs in the mops.
It's not better than a bare glass bottom, but doesn't seem worse either.
It's a matter of taste. But to focus on your question, all my
Aphyopsemions, Epiplatys amd lampeyes do well over sand.
