Re: collecting rain water.
Way out in the country we used to collect rainwater off the roof
into a cistern. We used the water for drinking, washing, bathing,
etc.
One thing we always did was to let it rain fairly hard for 15 minutes
or so before we began collecting it. Especially if it hasn't rained
for a while this allows the bird poop and other contaminants to wash
off the roof before we start collecting.
