RE: Notho fade away

About two years ago I became interested in an unusual malady afflicting some
Nothos. I termed the condition Notho-fade-away. The symptoms are simple, the
affected fish stop eating, their stomach contract and they just lose body
mass until they starve to death. No other symptoms are usually apparent. The
process takes from two to three weeks. The fish will not take food
regardless of what is offered. If they strike at it, at all, they will spit
it out again. The condition was always lethal.
After research, discussions with other Notho keepers and collectors,
observations experiments and a really lucky break I was able to determine
that the affliction was caused by water turbulence and/or an excessive level
of dissolved oxygen in the water. The condition can be induced by creating a
relatively rapid current in the water and/or by pumping in excessive air.
Whether current or high dissolved oxygen level is more lethal, I do not
know, one usually goes hand in hand with the other. But if you calm the
waters as in turning off your power filters and reduce air input to the bare
minimum required to operate the corner or sponge filter you will not see the
condition develop. You may even get fading fish to start eating if you catch
them in time and feed them small foods at first.
It goes without saying that there are pathogenic organisms which can cause
fish to stop eating and sometimes an overly aggressive fish may prevent
another from getting to the food but I found that there was an impressive
positive correlation between the amount of current/aeration and the onset of
Notho-fade-away. Since my discovery of this correlation I eliminated my
power filters and reduced the air to my Notho tanks, now I am being overrun
by fat little Nothos. I have seen no recurrence of the illness.
