I have seen fish drop their eggs in bags often enough. At first, I took this
as a good sign. I came to find that the opposite was true. Most of the
female fish which dropped their eggs in the bags died shortly after I got
them home. I believe that it is extreme stress which causes the females to
drop all of their eggs at once. A survival mechanism perhaps, when the fish
feels that death is imminent it lets go of all of its eggs giving its
offspring at least a slim chance. Or an even more plausible theory which
would indicate that the female lets go of the eggs to conserve her resources
for her own survival. Well who knows, just be very nice to her for the next
week or two and hope for the best.
Rosario LeCorte has long been an advocate of breeding fish over gravel. I
suppose it is a good way to protect the eggs from fish that would scatter
and then eat them. Some people actually breed the fish and then move them
from tank to tank and let the fry hatch in the tanks the parents were
removed from. Others aquavac the gravel and then sort out the eggs. I
believe either method can be stressful on the parents.
It is interesting to hear so much talk about this fish. Could it be that
they are coming back into fashion again?

2 trio of AMI survived the trip half the world with me. I have had them for
about 5 months now with 4 others Fundulopanchax species. I bred the other 4
but never ever got a single eggs from the AMI -although I found a lot of
eggs in one of the female bag after the trip. They do eat a lot but I guess
they need live food to condition them to breed. D. J. Ramsey, whom I got
the fish from, use gravel and longstrain peat moss in their breeding tank.
I will try that.

Hi Tyrone,
A few years ago this fish was available locally and I missed them at the
only auction they were at. I figured someone else would have them. Boy was I
wrong. A pair did get to a friend more recently, he is usually pretty good
at Fp., but he lost them double quick. Apparently these fish are a little
more delicate than some other Fp. I have heard from several friends who
tried this fish and wiped out. Maybe we do not give Fp. species the care
they deserve as many of them are so forgiving. Or maybe Amieti are just more
tricky than some others.
They are certainly colorful enough to be more popular than they are. By the
way I do not recall seeing them at the AKA Convention. I guess that some
people just do not think that they are worth the bother. Or maybe they are
just not the flavor of the month.

Why, aren't they colourful enough? Not worth the effort? Can't face
them again?
