RE: metal, on no!
In India we found that the best colored killies were on iron-rich
substrates. Ditto the best aquatic plant growth. Your screw may just give
you an improved strain :).
As to electroplated screws, zinc is more likely than cadmium (I work in the
trade) except for marine or aero applications. The amount on a screw is
pretty negligible anyway, the coating depth being about 0.0003"
The guys worrying about copper from dehumidifiers should remember that
Scheel deliberately added copper to his tanks to help prevent deseases.

Subject: metal, on no!
I just saw, and immediatly pulled out, a rusty metal SCREW from my
Fundulopanchax Scheeli tank!
I have no idea how it got there, the gravel was from another aquarium that
was from a friend. Thankfully they fish never seemed to get hurt on it. It
was of course point side up. They have been spawning so that was a fear of
mine.
Ok, so what do I do? I'll step up the water changes, but it was just
starting to look nice and brown from the driftwood. I use Proper pH 6.5 in
the tank. It is a 5 gallon with only a male and female in it.
Is there anything else to do or watch for?
