RE: Sex Ratio? -A working hypothesis- NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!!!!
Hi Allen,
Although this does not tie in with my original theory it does support the
theory that the fish somehow affect each other's sex.
Best regards,

I raised a large number of A. labarrei a couple of
years ago, and sold a number of pairs thruogh the F
and E list last summer. I kept two males and had
about 20 extra females. The two males decided to do
some living outside of the friendly confines of their
aquarium and found the environment not so friendly.
At this time the fish were approximately 1 year old.
A fellow killie keeper sent me approximately another
15 female labarrei. So I had 30 female labarrei each
approximattely 1 year or older. Now after the fish
are approximately 2 to 2 1/2 years old I find two
males and small fry swimming in the tank of females.
I cannot image two males trying to camoflauge (sp?)
their maleness for over 1 year when no male was
present. In my mind two of the 30 females became
functional males after 2 years of age.
There appears to be some anecdotal observations which
seem to suggest that female fish may under certain
conditions become a functional male, but very little
data to suggest that males can become functional
females.
