A term used for this is a "MALCHUSIAN CRUNCH". yeast do it all the time.
Consume as much of the available resources as possible, reproduce, and
consume more, and reproduce...suddenly all of the resources have been
consumed * and the entire population is wiped out instantly....
*(and gasses have been exchanged, Yes GW...Co2 is a green house gas!)
People are so much like yeast that way.
