RE: Sex Ratio?

Guys,

Thursday one of my male Riv. agilae swam into the sunlight and colored up,
even if it lasted only for a very short while he was a sight to behold. So
far they are mainly just pink little fish most of the time. But they are
eating their grindle worms and seem overall happy. One of the females seems
to like to sit on top of the thermometer out of the water. My female
xiphidius had a similar inclination.

Problems only exist until they are solved. With the amount of killikeepers
living in different parts of the world I must assume that someone is getting
good ratios somewhere. Locally there was an old timer who was getting mostly
one sex of Riv. Xiphidius using very soft acid water. He was exchanging fish
with someone in CA who had the exact opposite problem. I refuse to believe
that the ratio depend on which coast you live on. With N. Rachovii soft acid
water produces mostly females at a 200 to 1 ratio. Soft alkaline water gives
you more males than females but not dramatically.

The problem with Riv species is that they are water incubated and I am not
actually too sure when sex differentiation occurs. If it is at the time of
fertilization we need to adjust the water in the breeding tank. If it occurs
during incubation we need only adjust the water in which we incubate the
eggs. If the fish sex out after they are born we need to adjust the water in
the rearing tanks.

I would think that if there is someone out there who is getting good ratios
this would give us a starting point. This is of course is why I posed the
question. Although I tend to do more Nothos than anything else. I can see
myself getting into the Riv Agilae. If the Agilae grow as slowly as the XIP
I can see myself spending a great deal of time finding out that I am doing
something wrong. At least with Nothos you know in a few weeks what your sex
ratios are.

By the way are you guys using top or bottom mops with your agilae?

I saw the Riv.sp.Mahdia GY 97/7 at the convention. These fish were
knockouts. They certainly deserved all of the attention that they got.

Best regards,
