[OT] Re: Acid Rain
I would enjoy following some threads containing factual information,
studies, well thought out counter arguments. However,,
I'm not at all sure this subject can be discussed from a rational, sort of
scientific standpoint. For something that is as important as this may
be,,, I think the discussion deserves better than the normal religious
furor that seems to erupt at the first sign of rational thought.
I deal with threatened and endangered species issues on a daily basis,
emotions run high, lots of personal baggage gets carried along for the
ride. The baggage may get the parties to the table,,, but the only time
I've seen real, positive behavior is when it gets right down to dragging
out the data and kicking the dickens out of it. So many times,,, the
emotional baggage that comes along is a result of bad data,,, misunderstood
data,,, lack of data. And in a lot of cases,,, enough data is available to
resolve problems,,, if the engaged parties can just stay focused and not
dissolve into a puddle of emotional baby starving, tree cutting, gun
shooting, God trembling end of days, govermnent/THEY conspiracy sort of
discussion.
You know who THEY is,,, right? That'd be the folks that don't agree with
your current social, religious, political, racial, educational view.
Having said all that,,, being interested in human and natural effects on
the environment, I think I'd vote to have the list talk about specific
fish (mostly killies), and the local environmental conditions affecting
that specific fish population.
