Hi Kean
There are two basic different types of prepared Drosophila medium. Three
if you want to count fresh fruit mixes.
The first is a potato based media that contains a mold inhibitor and
often a blue dye which is used to aid in the viewing of the fly maggots.
This is the easiest to make since the basic recipe is to mix equal parts
of water and dust (with some variation) and let sit for 1 to 2 minutes.
It is then ready for a couple grains of yeast and your starter culture.
The other media is an agar based media like the Jazz Mix. There are
several ingredients in this mix which can be found on the webpage you
mentioned. This is the media used most often by research laboratories.
It requires mixing with water and cooking for 10 minutes. After it
cools, you can add your starter culture. The overall process is a lot
more time consuming. One other reason I like this media is that a little
goes a long way. A table spoon of potato flake media will make a
tablespoon of usable media where a table spoon of Jazz Mix will make
closer to 1/4 of a cup.
Both mixes work very well and I use them both. I believe that the fruit
flies that come from the Jazz mix are far more nutritious then the ones
that are grown on the plain potato flake media.
If you would like a sample of the jazz mix, or the other for that
matter, send me a self addressed stamped (2 stamps) envelope and I will
mail you some. That goes for anyone on the list (assuming I don't get a
million requests). I would also consider sending a larger container (1
pint deli containers) to anyone that was interested in a killifish
trade.
