I agree heartily with this viewpoint. Give the fish some shelter from attack
*and* light. I have lights over most of my tanks, and a staggering electric
bill. [I live in the peoples republic of CA, where they still think the
planning commissars make more sane economic decisions than customers.]
I use mops, fibrous peat or redwood "monkey fur," rocks and inverted
potpourri candle holders in my tanks to give retreats from harrassment, in
addition to lots of Java moss and water sprite (usually floating).
The light encourages plant growth which soaks up ammonia, and the fish are
healthier and more up front than when kept in dim tanks illuminated by room
light.
I figure "Why keep fish I can't enjoy looking at?" My SPP are in a hex tank
by my computer under a brilliant 39W CF lamp in a bright reflector, and they
are often out displaying for me despite all the tetras and rasboras they
have to compete with. Sue's ancient dolicopterus "Juan" is in the same tank,
and he *never* hides. The SPP did, as young, but have started to come out a
lot as they mature. I grew out a pair of BIVs in the same tank, and they,
too, were often on glorious display.
Lampeyes often go from really plain and dull to spectacular with moderate
adjustments to the amount of light. You should see the reverse trio of Apl.
kassenjiensis I got at WCW in a well-lighted 10G tank. WOW!
Dim light is for folks who can't stand the way their fish look, I guess. ;-)
