Why would we expect the number of species to be normally distributed?  I
can think of several reasons to expect that it wouldn't be, but rather
closer to a poisson distribution almost (as in, it's much easier to deviate
from the mean below it than above it, given what constraints we all face on
time and space.

Actually, I think that's part of the plan: publish the list of rare species
and hope folks come forward saying:  "
hey, Tom, that's not rare, everyone on my block has them"
