Plants primarily use light of the wave lenghts of 400 nm to 600 nm
("red and blue light) and not UV (<400 nm) to a great extent.
However, the UV is harvested by both plants and animals for the
production of various vitamins (eg. Vit D in animals which is
synthesized form cholesterol). Your normal flourescent lights don't
normally produce lots of UV in any case (which is why reptiles
need Vit. D supplemants) so I guess it is a non-issue. I'm sure
there is a more experianced plant physiologist on the list which
can give more info. But as a side not glass doesn't permit *any* UV
through niether (which is how I am able to stare at my ethidium
bromide stained DNA gels under the UV light with out any care for
the damage to my eyes).
