I believe that one is actually Fp. oeseri, and I wasn't aware they were not
found in the wild. any more. They aren't from a heavily-collected area,
these days, I think. Equatorial Guinea hasn't been politically hospitable
for years. If they aren't on Fernado Poo (Bioko Island) any more, they
should be considered for special maintenance by the FP. group of Killifish
Conservation Committee (KCC -- Art Leuterman -- Chair --
aleuterman at midf_com).

Fp. walkeri GH 74/2 Kutunze is, of course, one of the earliest in that
category, and has been long kept as a core species for protection by the
Killifish Conservation Committee. Their original habitat was paved over for
a market, I'm told.

Andre S. was just at WCW and informed me that Simps. alternatus has joined
the species whose original habitat is no more. Not as long in the hobby, it
was just defined in 1994 by Costa & Brasil.

Many SA Annuals will go this way. They apparently get found with the first
roads in, and then get immediately wiped out by forced development. We may
need to rethink species maintenance, as a result, to cope with such
phenomena.

BAKA officers kindly pulled two pairs of the alternatus from the recent WCW
and donated them to the SA Annuals sub-committee of KCC. We'll get them
going here, and be trying to organize a sound maintenance program with them
as a potential core species.

Harry Specht does Aphyo maintenace work for KCC, so might be a better one to
comment on those.

Generally, KCC core species are attractive fish, that are reasonably easy to
breed, and that have no remaining native habitat. After everyone in the
hobby has "been there, done that" they tend to disappear from the hobby,
without a bit of organized effort.

Contact Art if you feel capable of dedicating 4 or 5 tanks to a core species
for at least two years. You should be willing to swap stock with other
breeders and keep a good broad genetic base, with as little selection as
possible for size, color, etc.

Each core species needs about 3 such breeders.

BTW, while AKA provides some support for KCC, it is not a strictly North
American activity, and all serious hobbyists are encouraged to participate
and stay informed.
