Chlorine and water treatment

I sent an email yesterday to our local (WSSC) water company concerning the way they chlorinate water. I mentioned that aquarium hobbyists need accurate data in order to use the proper water treatment methods. Here's the reply:
----------------------------
The WSSC tap water is disinfected with free chlorine, not chloramine.
However, because of small amounts of ammonia in the Potomac River resulting
from the runoff from heavy rains, there can be some chloramines in the tap
water during these periods.

I consider this to be quite responsive.
