Species Maintenance
I sincerely hope that more people turn in their census so we can get a big
picture. Knowledge is the key to 99% of most everything, the other 99% being
dedication, hard work, luck and some more luck. There is a simple plan that
I use for myself. If I get a pair of whatever fish - until I have
successfully raised up fry, distributed to more than 3 people who are also
breeding and distributing, then I am a 'consumer' of that fish. (Consumer
being a bad thing)
Once I know that 3 people are raising fish from me and distributing them
also, then at least for the short term (year or so) I have done my own
species maintenance program. It doesn't matter what the fish is, same rules
apply. If I can do that with the same fish year after year, then it will be
ok and stay available in the hobby. Many of the fish from the past were so
easy that everyone moved on. Well since I don't consider myself ready to get
the fish that no one can breed, I do feel comfortable with trying to rebuild
some of the older easy guys. I became part of the Fp walkeri GH2/74 Kutunze
group and I am starting to ship out fish and eggs to people. Some of those
people are already raising up fry. You can't imagine how rewarding that is
to me. I currently have 11 tanks devoted to these fish. So it takes more
than one tank for sure.
I haven't filled out any breeders forms or whatever it is, because for me
the satisfaction is seeing the fish grow up, find new homes, and do well
there. So on paper, I'm a nobody. But the fish know better. I am really a
nobody in Atlanta, hah!
When the official list comes out, I will try to find another Fp that used to
be a biggie and now is nearly gone. And try to do it all over again. With
my luck, it will probably be Fp puerzli, they have it in for me.
Check your own tanks, and see how many of your own species you need to do a
maintenance program on.
