Not that it's my decision, but I like the idea of some regular
columns like this, and I agree that they would be better in JAKA. For
one thing, they are more likely to be archived.

I must comment, as I have before, that JAKA is actually less
technical than it once was. I am scanning and converting to PDF the
old JAKAs of the 60s at the moment and I can tell you there were more
technical and less hobbyist articles. I think the balance has varied
over the years.

I also would have to disagree that JAKA is the way it is because the
BOT says so (the gist of a statement made in a previous message). As
a recent member of the BOT I don't recall anyone dictating content.
Content is truly dictated by the nature of articles submitted,
providing that they are of decent quality. It is true that I have had
conversations with Brent (while I was a BOT member) about trying to
encourage some (I repeat some) scientific articles in JAKA with a
view to attracting original descriptions. My idea was to have a
section in JAKA in which such articles, which would be peer reviewed,
would appear, while the balance would consist of the hobbyist
articles. The reason for this approach was to try to give JAKA the
stature that would attract official species descriptions, not to
limit hobbyist articles.

In my opinion the bottom line is that content is mostly dictated by
what is submitted. If you'd like to see more articles about
experience with certain species, etc., encourage your friends to
submit them.
