Re: New to Killifish
Welcome Mike,
Your fish may be *Fundulopanchax (formerly Aphyosemion) gardneri*, sometimes
called the "Steel-Blue Killy," and are a lot of fun, if so. [Asterisks are
used to indicate italics, for scientific names in ASCII-only systems.] Go to
the AKA web site at www.aka.org and search around a little. There is an
on-line beginner's guide that you should check out first. There's also an
International Killifish Assn. site in Canada that also has a lot of pictures
of killies. I don't have the URL handy, but a search for IKA might turn it
up.
Breeding them may be important, as they can be semi-annuals or annuals, and
don't live quite as long as some other aquarium fish. Fortunately, breeding
most killies is easier than guppies, so we can keep a steady supply going.
Get back to us with any specific questions, once you have done the
background reading and determined what species you have. Most of the general
questions have been answered already at the AKA site and in a thing called
"The Krib" at www.thekrib.com. [The latter is a great general site for
fresh-water aquarium concerns.]
