Re: Offensive Remarks v. Free Speach
RJ presented a very thoughtful and tactful presentation of basic
democratic and humanist principles. I teach high school history and
government. These priciples are the bedrock of all my instruction. If the
First Amendment is to hold any meaning, it is imperitive that even
unpleasant and vile speech is protected too. Otherwise, ANY speech can be
censored! Better to have unpleasantness in the open to have it hidden where
we cannot defend ourselves from it! We all have a right to be heard. We do
not all have a right to never be offended. It is worth remembering. Even
here on Killietalk, it is important to be careful of censoring when reasoned
response might serve better.
