Re: Aphyosemion arnoldi

Knowing Gary is probably sitting in a jail in Quebec City right now
<chuckles>, I thought I'd kinda help move along the arnoldi discussion for
him until he returns to the real world <uhm Sorry Gary - couldn't resist
the chance - Folks - Gary is at the protests for the Hemispheric Free Trade
meeting.>

Anyway - I was among those who Gary passed arnoldi on to. Species
Maintenance Committee - so yes the AKA was semi-aware and we were hoping to
pass along enough to Fred for N&SRC, but unfortunately, the imports were
incredibly hard to work with. I used every techinique I could think of -
from standard fundulopanchax over wet peat - put away until eyed-up to
water incubation to full dried peat incubation for 3 months etc. A large
portion of the eggs simply died - infertile or whatever. I got through one
generation also. It was a lovely fish however and maybe Gary and I can
talk Oliver to try another shipment. Keep in mind, there may be a few
minor technicalities - like the cost. Much as I like Oliver - he is in
business and if my memory is accurate - a box of the Fp. arnoldi was $600
US at the time and the pairs turned out to be $30+ a pair once costs were
covered had we purchased the fish. So we are only talking about 20 pairs
at the time of importation. Now - I had nothing to do with the shipment -
it was all Oliver and Gary - I just was able to get a pair from Gary. Now
I did not have the velvet problem Gary had - so I can't comment on that.

Arnoldi close to thierryi or nothos - maybe a little - I found the fish
very much like Fp. robertsoni.

Would I like to get the fish again - You betcha! I love a good challenge,
but I would definitely want to group spawn them in a large tank. I suspect
that technique and alot of research of the locality where it was collected
might yield some results.
