multi-tank filtration, other ideas
Considering the overwhelming response of my "plumbing" problem, I've actually been thinking of some other potential solutions, maybe someone could give it a once over and see if there may be other issues to consider:
tanks within tanks:
I got this idea from something I used to do a couple years ago with decent success. Basically, I'd pick eggs from my Ap. lineatus "gold" and place them in a "breeder net" like some use for guppies and the like. This way, the eggs benefit from a more stable environment (temp & water chemistry.. think small butter dish vs. 20 gallons). I got great hatches from both the LIN and from another epiplatys (can't remember for the life of me what they were.. 3 stripes on the posterior).
Anyway, the idea is to use the critter keepers with the slotted tops. stack them in a larger tank (say 30gallon+), you may have to weight the bases down, I don't know. fill the 30 gallon tank. The slots allow water to circulate via osmosis (and any filtration in the main tank could also aid in this).
This would basically allow the benefits of "central filtration" and "larger water volume" while reducing potential plumbing disasters, etc. The slotted style critter keepers would keep fish apart, and if you breed "naturally", then the fry would be able to swim through the slots into the "main" tank area and hide in a big bush of javamoss in between tanks or something. There could be issues with some fish (top water fish), but that could be resolved, potentially, by:
one layer of tanks, water level just above slotted area, so that there's actually "air" contact. Same benefits, although lower water volume.
Crackpot ideas? Just wondering..
