I took several of your suggestions and did a little experimenting. I set
up two one gallon bowls with air stones. One with 100% rain water and
one with 100% well water. In the bowl with rain water I noticed very
little if any change in ph. In the bowl with well water I noticed a
significant rise from 8.0 to 8.8 in ph. This would indicate that the
problem of ph rise may not be with the lava rock. More experiments
coming.
