re: ro vs deionized water

hi all, could someone out there enlighten me on the difference between ro
and di water/ my reason for this question is that for many years now i have
been using water softener pillows from aquarium pharmaceuticals to soften my
water. these have worked great and i thought that i was finally set. then one
day i took some of my water to a friend to have the tds measured and it was
up around 600. i had just checked this water for gh and it measured on 2dH,
what gives? how can water be that soft and still give such a high tds reading
?is it because of the saltwater used to recharge the deioniation media?if so,
does this have a "real" effect on the tds or is the salt a non-factor as far
as killie breeding and egg hatching is concerned? in all modesty, i have been
fairly successful with many of the more "difficult " killies and i am just
trying to determine whether i should continue to use di water or if i could
improve my success with the purchase of an ro unit. i ahve done a bit of
research into the cost aspect between the to water softening techniques and
must admit that my choice was made entirely for financial reasons. the most
inexpensive ro unit will cost much more in the long run for maintenance,
water usage and power usage than the di set up that i am currently employing.
any and all responses are eagerly awaited, either private or here on this
site. thank you and now i'll return to the galleery and let the more learned
gentlepeople enlighten us all. gary darr aka#o5400
