Best bet is pH dropping too low. Peat will take care of most moderate
amounts of metal ions, hardness, etc. but it also lowers the pH two
factors contributing in the same direction. If a small tank like this
is really being fed heavily the water needs to be cycled frequently.
A good first indication of pH drop is fungus on uneaten food,
maybe too late by then.
Change the water, be careful of chlorine in the new water and don't
change all the water at once.
