Re: Killies anyone?
Good Point on the time Karl, even with a time zone change,
it is unfair to expect someone with a five or six hour run - or more! - to be
there in the morning. When people with killies or whatever to sell arrive
however, they register any entries and if they have items for sale, pop
open the box and post their listing. Maybe in the past, it just seems like they
started before I could get around to the box sales. I can remember times where
someone (often you or Larry W.) would bring some incredible fish in, probably
the only one a really wanted at the time, and by the time I got to the fish
sales, the species or strain I really wanted was sold out.
The box sales tend to begin on Saturday whenever a person
gets there. In the small experience I've had, probably a lot more items were
sold from boxes in the afternoon. Sometimes killies, plants and food cultures
were even being purchased into the evening.
Times tend to be negotiable at local killie shows.
Certainly registration for the regular exhibition/competition is not going to be
denied someone from any distance, just because they arrived a little after
the theoretical benching deadline. A good example of this was the Michiana
Killifish Karnival last February where some people encountered awful driving
conditions. Everybody just shrugged off a variable of a couple of hours, opened
fish boxes and had a great time palavering.
As you know, Chicago made an effort to change their
schedule and rules a few years ago specifically to accommodate people from
Detroit. Because I'm kidding about my inability to get to events as
quickly as some would like, there is no reason why you should feel flamed.
:)
I recall an AKA convention a bunch of years ago where a
guy, who tarried to pack some more entries to be ultimately donated, was turned
away because he was over the deadline. They turned down over 30 pairs of his
typically wonderful killies. I was dismayed for that person and very
surprised. It is true that fish entered closer to judging sometimes are less
settled, but our approach has often been to move the judging back if we could.
Sometimes we have even switched the afternoon speaker and judging to give
everyone a chance to get settled.
An advantage of the local shows over bigger events is that
the "tyranny of the schedule" need not be in evidence. After all the show
is for the killie nuts, not the other way around.
All the best!

Don't the box sales usually start when people arrive
Saturday morning? At least that is what Darrell Ullisch has been telling
late risers like myself. :) Now if he would just explain what "sunlight"
is.
All the best!
