OK, I oversimplified. Once you know what you have, then you can use it very 
effectively as a monitor because you have a mixture of your known hard water 
and soft water. But, when you start with an unknown water quality, the TDS 
meter doesn't tell you whether it is hard or soft, just whether it is 
conductive or not. I use my TDS meter more than any other test (other than 
chlorine) because it is simple, reliable, sensitive and measures something 
important. The conductivity directly relates to osmotic pressure, excessive 
changes in which can be deadly. It also will tell me if my water parameters 
have changed due to evaporation, waste products or other contamination.
