Bill,
OK, I oversimplified. Once you know what you have, then you can use it very
effectively as a monitor because you have a mixture of your known hard water
and soft water. But, when you start with an unknown water quality, the TDS
meter doesn't tell you whether it is hard or soft, just whether it is
conductive or not. I use my TDS meter more than any other test (other than
chlorine) because it is simple, reliable, sensitive and measures something
important. The conductivity directly relates to osmotic pressure, excessive
changes in which can be deadly. It also will tell me if my water parameters
have changed due to evaporation, waste products or other contamination.
