RE: 2 1/2 Gal. Tanks (building your own)

Hi Good Killie-Folks

The trade secret is the phrase "scrap glass". By requesting scrap glass you
are expressing your willingness to accept glass with minor flaws or
scratches or simply glass left over from other jobs.

In all reality you usually get perfectly good, pristine glass which they
would otherwise sell you at full price. By asking for scrap glass your glass
dealer knows up front that you are not willing to pay the retail market
price for table tops or windows.

You should also tell your glass dealer that you do not need your glass
beveled, sharp edges are fine. Letting him know that it is for fish tanks
will also put him on the right track.

The bottom pain for a 20 gallon long runs about $16.00 as a coffee table
insert and $5.00 as scrap glass for an aquarium. What makes it even more
interesting, of the two partners at the same shop, one sells scrap glass,
the other does not. What fun it is to order glass from the first and pick it
up from the other!

By the way you might find that you can get some great bargains on chipped,
leaking or otherwise defective tanks at your LFS. I usually get them at
$2.00 to $3.00 each regardless of size. Just be very careful, if you value
your time, it is very easy to put many hours of work into one small tank,
and some tanks are harder to cut down than others.

By the way, some years ago there were some commercial plywood tanks around.
Does anyone know what paint was used to seal them and what was used to caulk
them? I looked at marine epoxy paint and it is very expensive. To make it
more problematic some of it actually boasts that it is toxic to marine life.
I have been considering using this paint on the slate bottom of some old
tanks instead of glass lining them. I look forward to your suggestions.

Best regards,

-RJ-

I went by my local glass store and they wanted $2.25 for each piece, which
amounts to $11.25 for the glass. Since a 2.5 and 5 gal sells for $13 here
locally....
