RE: I can't get Java Fern to grow!

Hi all

Java fern is a temperamental plant. It can flourish for months even
years and then collapse. Why? I don't know.

What I do know is that they like high nitrates and fish densities.
They can tolerates some salt and seem to benefit from slightly
harder water. I have seen no negative effect from keeping it with J.
moss or any other plant. It grows best tied to a piece of wood but
will just as willingly creep across the gravel. At no time must it be
sunk into the gravel.

Vallis: if you can not keep Vallis allive you have serious problems.
Vallis can grow in any well lit conditions. Check you water
chemistry for heavy metals etc... or perhaps rather the lack of
certain ones like magnesium or calcium. I can't grow
amazonswords well because of this calcium/magnesium problem.
Another vital nutrient that is often ignored is potassium. Lots of
light is very NB although the J.fern can grow in quite dimly lit
conditions. Under well lit conditions it can rocket into growth if
there is enough nutrients.

The fact that some of the plants are "stagnating" indicates that
something is missing from the water. In my opinion the fertilizers
sold by Tetra and SeaPharm are perhaps the best. Try them and
see what happens. Even my Amazons are now growing with these.
