ANNUAL EASTER COUNT - KILLIE CENSUS

As announced in the March BNL - April is Census Month for the Species
Maintenance Committee.

I am asking all American Killifish Association members to submit a list of
all the species of Killifish they currently have in their fishrooms. As
always I will maintain anonymity of all who send me a listing. During this
month, you will have a couple of options on how to participate.

<Please note: While I understand there are several readers of Killie Talk
who are not AKA members, this program is an internal project to determine
what species are being kept by AKA members - not a world-wide census of
killifish. I apologize if you feel excluded, but since the committee is
part of an organization, I feel this first census needs to be within the AKA.>

1: There is a Submission Form on the AKA Website (
http://www.aka.org/members_only/members.html ) for the annual
census. This can be found in the Members Only area and is listed as
"Submit 2001 Census Report" . This will send your listing directly to
me. I would ask that you submit the listing only one time. I would
appreciate knowing how many adult pairs of the fish you have - basically,
the way to do this is list a species, place a semi-colon and then the
number you have. Initially the form was set up to add fish only, but since
this is a count, that is the easiest way to do it.

2: You can send me a listing directly either by Email to this
address - tgrady at twcny_rr.com - or you can choose to mail it via
snail mail to Tom Grady, 10 Short Ave., Malone, NY, 12953

3: In Florida, Illinois and Colorado, I have volunteers to collect the
data and forward it to me. You can (or will be contacted by) give your
list to Allan Sandra in Florida - Darrell Clendenon in Colorado or John
Metzger in the Chicago region.

I am certainly willing to accept a few more volunteers in other clubs of
regions of the country (world AKA members also) and will immediately post
contact info.

In closing: I kind of want to push people a little. We talk alot about
Species Maintenance on this list, in our clubs and even in conversations on
the phone, but little has been accomplished in reality. This is the first
time a true census has been undertaken by the AKA and your participation is
necessary for this project to succeed. I know in the past I personally
have used the famous comment "Someone Else will Do It" for many
things. Folks - unless you participate - its useless to continue to talk
about species maintenance and we should all just go have fun in our
fishrooms and ignore the species which disappear from the hobby. Maybe
this is a harsh - but it is reality. All the talk in the world is just
talk - either you participate or you don't. The choice is yours, but I am
certain fish will become extinct in the hobby and around the world if we do
not make a serious attempt to identify those in danger and this is the
first step.

Thanks ... Tom
