That is interesting, I will have to try this in my hatchling fry
tanks, and tanks too small for good filtration. Thanks for the heads up.
Did you observe how long it took to colonize the lava rock chunk with the
beneficial bacteria?

One final note: I set up a 1 gallon fish tank using a chunk of lava rock as
a filter. No Drip, No air, no motor, no gravel and it kept the water
extremely clear and the fish healthy. Partial water changes were done every
three weeks or so. I tested for ammonia and nitrite and never found any. At
this point, I am even considering using lava rock instead of gravel to see
if the smaller pieces have the same effect.
