Out of all the hydroponic medium you should try expanded clay, it sounds
more like what your looking for. Crushing it would probably work better that
keeping it as balls. I have been thinking about putting crushed in the up
lift tubes of my sponge filters. Probably a waste of time.

The dust from vermiculite and perlite is pretty nasty so always work with it
wet.
