Actually, it's the lack of circulation that deprives the interior of the small pores of oxygen, hence the anaerobic process. Larger pores allow for oxygenated water to circulate inside for the aerobic process. Manufacturers of the ceramic biomaterial use these distinction in describing the benefit of their products over plastic bio-materials, such as bioball, which only provide exterior surface area for bacteria colonization.
