I have used upholstery sponge and kitchen sponges with attached nylon
scrubber to make small filters for shoeboxes, etc. Glue the scrubber to a
small tile for weight. Cut upholstery sponge to fit box filters, etc.
The Jungle "Dirt Magnet" style filters finally became so cheap (less than
$2, mail order), I just quit doing it. The "Dirt Magnet Jr." is perfect (if
you cut the lift tube in half) for shoeboxes.

Politicians and diapers have one thing in common.
They should both be changed regularly
and for the same reason.
