Re: Water reports, iron in water (new question)

Here is a question I have never seen addressed on killietalk. What is the
effect of potassium permanganate on fish (if any?) When we moved out here
with our well water, we had it tested by a guy who wanted to sell us a water
softener. He told us Canton city water (which is what we came from) was "24"
and our well water was "11 or 12" and they didn't consider water soft till it
was "10". But our water direct from the well has so much iron it literally
rusts! He sold us the KMN04 filter to take the iron out, and said it won't
stay in the water and affect the fish (I asked him). It takes out about half
of the iron (instead of rusting in 1 hour it takes about 24). If anyone
knows, what is worse for the fish - the iron or the KMN04 or is the guy
telling me the truth about it not staying in the water? By the way, thanks
for the info so far on this thread - I learned that the difference in
hardness is probably why (I think) I lost my Amecas when we moved (going from
"24" to "11 or 12". I ordered a TDS meter, although I have a test kit
already. By the way, other than rust my pH from the well is 7.0 to 7.2, GH is
24 and kH is 21. Thanks for any info. Wright, you seem to know alot about
water quality - any thoughts?     Carolyn (calling for snow here in Ohio
again tomorrow!)
