I find they're quite helpful for maintaining the algal load. I keep snails
in all my daphnia and moina tanks and that seems to help the stability
quite a bit. Maybe I'm doing something wrong , but it does seem to work.
I also periodically dump in some plant fertilizer (like shultz's) and have
24 H light.
