RE: Cyclopse
Hi David,
I have a small form of Cyclops living in most of my fish tanks. It is
interesting to note that when I wet peat which had been dried for three
months the Cyclops hatched out at about the same time as the fry. I have
had Cyclops in with Daphnia and a new food animal I am working with and
although they all are impossible to get rid of they never seem to get really
prolific.
The species I have is about the same size as baby brine shrimp. I'm
actually not quite sure what they are eating. They would no doubt make an
excellent food for killifish fry if they could be raised in sufficient
numbers. I have a few set ups which generate fry on their own. I am quite
sure that the baby killifish are living off these Cyclops and other small
animals living among the plants.
Developing a method to mass produce Cyclops in the fish room sounds like a
great idea. As I mentioned earlier I am currently working on another very
promising food animal and I am not quite ready to start work on Cyclops
right now. I would however be willing to compare notes with you and I would
be very interested in your progress with these critters, should you choose
to undertake this project.
I worked with Daphnia and Moena. I was attempting to raise them 2 liter
soda bottles. I was feeding them green water. The cultures would start well
enough, then suddenly die off. I have reached the conclusion that these
water fleas would most likely do better in an aquarium or other larger
container. A sponge filter and a little aeration might go a long way
towards eliminating the dying off phenomenon I experienced in the soda
bottles. Cyclops will do well in soda bottles, they do not suffer the die
offs of Daphnia, but as I mentioned earlier for me they never seemed to be
prolific enough to provide a good food source.
Best of luck,
-RJ-

Have you thought about Moina? much smaller than daphnia, very nutritious
and fairly easy to keep. I've switched from/supplement BBS to Moina since
they survive indefinitely in fresh water.
