Species Maint.
I've been following the list as always and it seems that when all is
said and done after the flames die, a lot of good arises from the
ashes. So far I see an awareness renewed by the"old guard"for handling
ambitious and sometimes impetuous youth. And perhaps
some new found respect by the younger generation of killie keepers for
those who have kept the watch for so long and built so much.Anyone can
criticize.It's an action
that's as often as not destructive-negative.We should all pause and
think, inquire, try to be as informed as possible before speaking. Also as
we age we tend to get complacent
and resistant to change often without really recognizing it.I know I've
been there and
said those fatal words myself "tried it before, didn't work"and then
dismiss the proposal
as well as the well meaning youngster who just may have had a new slant
on things
and the energy and means to accomplish something useful.Hopefully we all
recognize
the purpose of this list is to exchange ideas and
information-"communication"!And lastly that no one-No One,is ever above
common courtesy.
Particulars
I now believe that we pretty much understand that:
1.We have established that species maint.does not mean only"new and
rare"
2.A successful survey of maintained species has to be accomplished and
made
generably available.
3.We might to a greater degree recognise that breeding, being a true
breeder is more
than just producing some fry then moving on.It is maintaining and
striving to
produce the "best fish"you can.(Forgotten sometimes today with the
number and
availibility of species, like kids in a candy store we tend to take a
bite then move on to
the next treat
4.Do whatever we can to expand the hobby.Simple math, more species, more
killie
keepers needed.Ever increasing loss of habitat only increases the
need to expand
the hobby if we expect to keep many of these fish from disappearing.
5.The recognition that local and the national organizations both stand
to benifit each
other.Communicate,cooperate.
OK,on this last point how about asking the affiliate clubs to conduct
a species
survey and turn it into the AKA?
AKA- print a species list, make it on bright colored paper(sounds
ridiculous but I
know from experience it 'will' get a better responce).Put simple
boxes for people to
check-Maintained<>Breeding<> This could be done via the Net and/or a
mailing.
Just some ideas.Might help,might not.
Before I sign off let me say that I for one value the AKA,it's
publications,and
services(online store,JAKA,BNL,Members Only section,this list)a great
deal.The
people in this hobby truly are wonderful.I've been very involved with
Gun Dogs,thier
clubs both regional and national,am myself a "core"member and have
seen everthing
from fistfights to million dollar lawsuits. The people in this hobby
are terrific and
in spite of the very rare bruised ego this list is a wealth of
knowledge and a breath of
freash air.
