Amen!
Unfortunately, it may get worse before it gets better.
AOL 6.X, I'm told on the Aquatic Plants Digest, has now made it impossible
for users to select plain text for their messages. HTML is the default. One
must get another mail service to even participate on APD, for all MIME
alternative, HTML and Attachments are blocked by the list server.
In addition to making list messages unreadable, HTML can open a horrible
back door for invasion of your privacy in most operating systems and
browsers. Just opening the HTML message can run a hidden Javascript that
does stuff behind your back.
A minimum precaution is to check preferences in your messaging software, and
be *certain* that Javascript is disabled.
